What Is Formaldehyde?
Formaldehyde is a colorless, irritant gas with no odor. It cannot be detected by smell alone and requires testing with detection instruments. It has irritating effects on the eyes and nose, and at high concentrations, it is carcinogenic. Families undertaking home renovations must pay attention to this issue.
This are Formaldehyde levels exceeding the standard:
Below 0.1 PPM – Healthy
Below 0.2 PPM – Non-toxic
0.2-0.3 PPM – Keep doors and windows open, ensure air circulation.
Above 0.4 PPM – Measures should be taken to remove formaldehyde.
The formaldehyde removal solutions are divided into three types:
1. Wood
Formaldehyde-based resins are used in particleboard, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), and plywood. These materials are often found in furniture, cabinets, and shelving. Some furniture items, particularly those made from composite wood products, may contain formaldehyde-based adhesives.
How To Apply?
Apply it on the surface and edges of non-adhesive laminated boards. Then apply it on wooden boards before customizing furniture. For durability approximately 10-22 years or more.
2. Paint
Certain paints and walls may contain formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing agents to enhance durability. It is not suitable for glossy/non-absorbent wall because glossy and non-absorbent surfaces do not allow formaldehyde-based compounds to adhere properly. Formaldehyde needs a porous or slightly rough surface to bond effectively.
How To Apply?
Water-based paint suitable for wall or ceiling surfaces (not suitable for glossy/non-absorbent coatings). Absorbs and decomposes formaldehyde gas in indoor air, effectively reducing its concentration. For durability approximately 19 years or more.
3. Fabric
Formaldehyde is used to treat fabrics to enhance their wrinkle resistance, ensuring they maintain a smooth appearance after washing and wearing. The treatment with formaldehyde helps in retaining the fabric’s shape and strength, extending the lifespan of the product.
How To Apply?
Spray it on absorbent curtain fabric. Then utilize the surface of the curtain fabric to absorb and decompose the emitted formaldehyde. It will helps to reduce indoor formaldehyde concentration by decomposing formaldehyde in the air. For its durability estimated up to 6 months (recommended for reapplication after 6 months).
Conclusion
Formaldehyde treatment in wrinkle-free fabrics provides significant advantages in terms of maintenance, durability, and aesthetic appeal. While it has been a staple in textile manufacturing, ongoing efforts to improve safety and environmental sustainability are paving the way for newer, safer alternatives. This will help refresh your home and turn it into a cosy and healthier space, protecting you and your family from formaldehyde.
Q1: Is formaldehyde harmful to humans?
A1: Formaldehyde is a highly toxic systemic poison that is absorbed well by inhalation.
Q2: Is smelling formaldehyde bad for you?
A2: Formaldehyde will irritates the nose, eyes and throat. These irritations can happen when exposed to low levels of formaldehyde.
